Feed in Tariffs (FITs)

Using powers in the Energy Act 2008, The UK Government has introduced a new system of feed-in tariffs to encourage small scale, low carbon electricity generation of less than 5MW

The new feed-in tariffs will work in conjunction with the Renewables Obligation (RO) and the Renewable Heat Incentive (RHI) which was launched on 1 February 2010.

When did FITs start?

The FITs scheme started on the 1st April 2010.

What is FITs ?

Using FITs the government hopes to encourage additional low carbon electricity generation by organisations, businesses, communities and individuals

This clean energy cashback scheme will allow people to invest in small scale low carbon electricity for a guaranteed payment for the electricity they generate.

Electricity generating technologies eligible for feed-in tariffs are:

  • Wind

  • Solar photovoltaics (PV)

  • Hydro

  • Anaerobic digestion

  • Domestic scale microCHP with a capacity of 2kW or less
